The memorial «Brest Hero-Fortress» is one of the largest monuments of courage and bravery of Soviet people who defended their freedom in the Great Patriotic War. The memorial begins with a monumental main entrance in the form of a huge star cut in a concrete block. It was opened on September 25, 1971 with witness of veterans who survived the heroic defense of the Brest Fortress of 1941.
«We remember ... So the war began», dedicated to the memorable events of the beginning of the Great Patriotic War.
The Belarusian hero city of Brest was the first to meet the fierce attack of the Nazis in 1941. The invaders’ attack was unexpected and sudden for civilians. Nobody was prepared for it, and numerous warnings were ignored.
We now know from historical evidence that such carelessness was naive, and it was simply criminal on the part of the country's leaders. Music and laughter sounded in the border Brest on a warm Saturday evening, June 21, young people had fun and danced, people made plans for tomorrow's Sunday – the city and the fortress lived pleasantly and peacefully.
The ensemble’s compositional center is the «Courage» monument, a 33,5-meter high sculpture of a warrior, on the back of which are relief compositions telling about certain episodes of the heroic defense of the fortress. The unified architectural and artistic ensemble of the memorial commemorating the "legendary story of the heroes of the Brest fortress", includes the ruins of the old fortress, battle sites, and monumental sculptures.
The world-famous memorial became a symbol of the unwavering staunchness of the Soviet people during the Second World War. The Brest Fortress was awarded the honorary title “Hero Fortress”, an incredible number of books were written and many feature films were made, and the Belarusians called it one of the seven wonders of Belarus.
Clinic employees laid flowers at the «Courage» memorial and honored the memory of soldiers with a moment of silence. This tour reminded us of those heroic days and those people who, at the cost of their lives, defended the freedom and independence of our country.
