Until the 70s specialized nephrological assistance to people of the Republic of Belarus had been provided by general practitioners, a nephrologist specialty in practical medicine and science hadn’t existed.
In 1970 for the first time in the Republic of Belarus on the basis of the 4th City Clinical Hospital of Minsk a nephrological department with 40 beds was opened. The department worked closely with the Department of Urology of Minsk State Medical Institute under the supervision of Academician M. Saŭčanka. The first domestic "artificial kidney" devices, vascular access by the “Skribner” shunt method could not provide adequate renal replacement therapy and save patients from formidable complications.
In 1997 on the basis of the nephrology department, treatment of patients with diabetes mellitus and with a terminal stage of kidney damage by hemodialysis and method of permanent outpatient peritoneal dialysis, the experience of which has been extended to all regional centers, was started.
Since 2008 on the basis of the clinic, the City Nephrology Center has been opened. The center includes the nephrology department, the hemodialysis department and the consultative and diagnostic nephrology department.
